in our state delegations and across the country. i'm very proud that in california our delegation of democrats is a majority of women, not even counting our two senators, senator feinstein and senator boxer so women are empowered in california. i'm also want to acknowledge that although our numbers are great here, two of our colleagues have gone on to the senate, senator-elect tammy baldwin and we're very proud of that. [ applause ] senator-elect macy hirano, only the second woman of color to serve in the senate. that's pretty exciting and unfortunately we won't have kathy hochul and betty sutton in this next congress, but the future is soon and coming upon us and we know they will be making a great public contribution. so here we are in the past week since the election, we're still finishing up some of our campaigns, we're very proud of the success as i said yesterday and as you see here today. why is it important for us to make this statement of the strength of women in the congress of the united states? of the house democratic women? because this is where the hopes and dreams o
california. congratulations on your election and re-election. it's good to see you. let me ask you about the fiscal cliff. are you encouraged by what you heard from john boehner? >> i'm encouraged. i don't think there's any way we can go over the cliff. we can't afford to. i am encouraged by what i heard the speaker said. the only thing that struck me funny in how he expressed himself is in talking about this being the president's moment, that this was basically his responsibility. this is a shared responsibility, both house and senate leadership and the white house are going to have to come together. both parties are going to have to come together. these problems are simply too large for either party to solve alone. plainly, that's what the country wants us to do. >> you heard one of the things that speaker boehner did was he shot shouted out to the president this is your moment. let me read to you what gale collins said today. "in the past when these things came up, the president's failing was his inability to hide his contempt for many of the people that occupy capitol hill. now is a
to the whole question of whether states must grant same sex marriage. that's the big california case, the prop 108 case and less certain the court will take that case, i think. those are the two biggies that we'll watch. we may or may not find out on friday whether they will take them. we'll find out friday or the following monday. >> there is also some late breaking news in just the past hour. immediate challenges after the president's health care law became law. what's this latest announcement about? >> this is one of the first challenges to the law actually filed before the supreme court rule. this was brought by liberty university, a christian college in virginia that claims the employer mandate, the individual mandate violate religious freedom. what the supreme court basically said is we're not going to address the merits of the case. we're not saying whether you're right or wrong. we're simply saying the off ramp that the federal appeals court put the case on was the wrong one. try again. it gives liberty university a chance to go back to the trial court and start all over again. the oba
the mexican mafia is operating in northern california. are there serious indications that they are and what are the chances we'll see more drug violence here in the u.s.? >> no, i don't think that there are of-that the mexican mafia is this a huge way involved in drug distribution at a local level inside the united states. i think one thing to keep in mind, the general talks about adolescent drug use numbers, but the numbers for overall drug use in particular for overall chronic drug use are down pretty dramatically over the last decade and a half. if you look at the numbers for cocaine, for example, according to the national household survey, we have half the number of chronic cocaine users that we did just six years ago. that's astonishing. so i think in the long run, what we're talking about is a market for drugs in the united states, particularly hard drugs, that is diminishing. and i think what you will see and that what we've already seen in the long arc since the crack epidemic is a decline in the violence that accompanies that. now, south of the border is a little bit of a different
there's this reality show about a couple of guys in california who carve impressive sculptures out of trees using chain saws. so a writer at "the new york times" gets a crazy idea and thinks, i wonder if they can teach me to do that over skype. you have got to click on my must read just to see how it all turned out. it's up on our facebook page at facebook/janua facebook/jansi facebook/jansingco. it's amazing what soup can do. starts with arthritis pain and a choice. take tylenol or take aleve, the #1 recommended pain reliever by orthopedic doctors. just two aleve can keep pain away all day. back to the news. just two aleve can keep pain away all day. music is a universal language. but when i was in an accident... i was worried the health care system spoke a language all its own with unitedhealthcare, i got help that fit my life. information on my phone. connection to doctors who get where i'm from. and tools to estimate what my care may cost. so i never missed a beat. we're more than 78,000 people looking out for more than 70 million americans. that's health in numbers. unitedheal
